ITOJO hospital in Ruhaama Constituency will soon have more staff houses courtesy of the Egyptian Government.
The First Lady and Minister for Karamoja Affairs Janet Museveni on Thursday received a cheque worth $280,000 (sh683m) a donation from the Egyptian Government towards the construction of doctor’s houses at Itojo Hospital.
The cheque was handed over to the First lady, who is also the MP Ruhaama, by the Egyptian Ambassador to Uganda, Sabry M Sabry, at her office in the Office of the Prime Minister. Present were the Deputy Ambassador of Egypt to Uganda, Mohamed El-Hamzawi and health ministry Permanent Secretary Dr. Asuman Lukwago.
The money will fund the construction of four flats of two bedrooms each, a living room, a kitchen and a store. This is an addition to the three staff houses constructed earlier on at Itojo with Egyptian funding.
Other work done by the same Government at the hospital includes the renovation of a paediatric and maternity ward, operatiing theatre plus re-roofing of one ward. They have also done water and sewerage repairs including construction of a sewerage lagoon, the provision of three doctors and a nurse from Egypt as well as an assortment of medical equipment, including hospital beds.
The First Lady expressed gratitude to the Egyptian Government, saying that the staff houses will go a long way in ensuring that there is a dDoctor on call 24 hours a day since they will be residing at the hospital premises.
She said the Government will continue working with Egypt to also enable the establishment of a nursing school at Itojo Hospital.
Handed over the cheque to Dr. Lukwago, she said the onus was on their ministry to ensure that standard work is done and there is value for this money.
Dr. Lukwago said the construction work at the hospital will commence in August 2011. Sabry also informed the First lady about the arrangement with the Ministry of Health in organising the use of Larvicidin material produced from Egypt in controlling malaria.
