The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) yesterday advised the Lagos State Government against appointing caretaker committees ahead of the 2011 council polls.

The tenure of the current local governments in Lagos State is expected to end in August.Consequently, there had been speculations that the state planned to appoint caretaker committees before the holding of council election by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission.

The South West secretary of the CNPP, Mr Austin Nnorom, told NAN in Lagos that “there is a need for newly elected administration to immediately take over the councils.

“Having a vacuum at the end of the tenure of the present councils will be unconstitutional.

“It is also inappropriate to appoint caretaker committees when it is possible to hold elections just like the general elections,’’ Nnorom said. (NAN)
