Free agent Steven Caldwell hoping to stay at Wigan Athletic for another year

The Scotland international only arrived at the club last August, on a 12-month deal from Burnley and is now believed to be a free agent after reports claimed he had been released by the club.

However, the 30-year-old has admitted he is not sure whether he will be offered another deal at Wigan but would like to stay having enjoyed his time at the club, where his brother Gary also plays.

“I’m basically a free agent as I don’t know what’s going to happen with Wigan,” he said.

“I was under the impression there was the possibility of staying for another year if I wanted.

“But no matter what happens, I most definitely enjoyed the opportunity I had there.”

Caldwell made just 10 appearances for the Latics last season, with his last start coming back in January in the 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa.
