Former Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams has joined Manchester City’s ‘football operations department’ after more than a decade at the hem of the 1995 Premier League champions.

Williams was at Ewood Park for 13 years before leaving shortly after the Indian poultry group Venky’s completed their £23 million takeover of Rovers last November. He will start his new job at Eastlands on July 1.

“John Williams is a hugely respected figure in the football world and I admire him greatly,” Manchester City’s chief executive Gary Cook told the club’s official website.

“Unsurprisingly, a number of organisations were keen to work with him and I was therefore delighted when he accepted my offer to join us.

“We must ensure that our targets are not impacted by the high volume of daily operational tasks. John’s support of Brian Marwood, Football Administration Officer and the football operations team will enable us to ensure those targets are met and he will be a great asset to the club.”

Williams’ roles will include the renewal and disposal of contracts and working closely with the legal team at Manchester City.
