Former Manchester City midfielder Gary Owen: Roberto Mancini wants quality over quantity in the transfer market

Former Manchester City midfielder Gary Owen believes manager Roberto Mancini is searching for two or three quality signings to enhance his squad, as opposed to a revamp.

The Eastlands outfit won their first trophy in over three decades last season, when they beat Stoke City 1-0 in the final of the FA Cup.

City have a wealth of stars that they brought in after Sheikh Mansour’s takeover, and some have been linked with a move away from the club in favour of greener pastures.

But Owen believes that Mancini should not make big changes to his squad or increase the number of players he may have at his disposal, as much as increasing the overall quality of the squad.

“Man City are working on two or three signings, it’s not a question of wholesale changes but players who will make our squad better not keep it at the same level,” he told talkSPORT.

“The key is to not get rid of your players in case you can’t get any in because we have a huge season ahead of us.

“When the owners came in the City owners made it clear they wanted to make the club one of the places that all the players wanted to come to.

“It was important that they had to buy big, heavily and quickly.

“We’re at a stage now though where the players who are not even in the squad that would probably be playing in the sides of many other Premier League clubs.”
