Cameroon: European Union To Support Cameroon Attain MDGs

The European Union is preparing projects in the areas of child and mother mortality in order to support Cameroon and other countries attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Head of the European Union Delegation to Cameroon, Ambassador Raul Mateus Paula made the declaration in Yaounde yesterday, June 23 after an audience with the Speaker of Cameroon’s National Assembly, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril.

Ambassador Raul Mateus Paula said during the last United Nations General Assembly session, the European Union made available additional one billion Euros ( approximately FCFA 656 billion) to support countries attain the MDGs by 2015.

Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril and his guest used the audience to review Cameroon-European Union cooperation, which particularly centres on sectors such as good governance, infrastructure and rural development. The Head of EU Delegation said they expressed the need for the cooperation to be multiplied. He disclosed that the, “European Union is in the process of finalising and implementing with Cameroon all projects contained in the 10th European Development Fund (EDF)” and expressed satisfaction at the implementation of projects and Cameroon’s level of using the funds. The European Union, he disclosed, has in the past two years engaged about 414 million Euros (approximately FCFA 280 billion) for projects in the 10th European Development Fund that spans through 2008 to 2013.

The European Union Delegation in Cameroon was originally established in 1975 and works in close collaboration with member States of the European Union represented in Cameroon to coordinate all matters relating to cooperation, political relations, economy and trade. The Delegation does not replace member States, as consular tasks are the responsibility of their diplomatic representation in Cameroon.
