The 2012 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has congratulated former President Kufuor on the honour bestowed on him by the World Food Prize Foundation for leading Ghana to become the first sub-Saharan African country to cut by half the proportion of citizens who suffer from hunger and those living under the recognized poverty line of US$1.25.

A statement issued yesterday and signed by the NPP flagbearer noted: “This prestigious award confirms President Kufuor’s tireless and competent efforts in prosecuting the old war against poverty.

The statement added: “His visionary policies, which led to significant expansion of the economy, introduction of live-saving and life-improving social interventions, greater business and consumer confidence, job creation, consistent rise in food production, massive expansion of road infrastructure to our rural communities and a doubling in cocoa production within 6 years, among other things.”

According to Nana Akufo-Addo significance of Mr Kufuor’s achievement as “the President of our Republic is further underlined by the fact that he shares this award with on of the most iconic leaders of our generation, former Preisident Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, who also introduced policies that took millions of Brazilians out of poverty.”

The NPP Presidential Candidate believes former President Kufour has provided the necessary foundation for the economic transformation of the nation, and also a strong platform on which the NPP will campaign for a return to the corridors of power in 2013.

“His achievement gives the New Patriotic Party (NPP) a stronger platform to prosecute the campaign of bringing back hope and prosperity to Ghana, and God willing, with the Ghanaian people so consenting, the NPP will return in 2013, under my leadership, to continue with the all-important project of modernizing our society, transforming the economy, winning the war against poverty and bringing prosperity to the broad masses of Ghanaians.”
