Obure Tells Cops to Probe Kisii School Dorm Fires

Kisii County leaders have expressed concern over a spate of school fires in the area. Cabinet minister Chris Obure and ODM activist Gideon Moreka called for a probe into the mystery fires.

Obure said in a telephone interview: “Investigations should be done to unearth who are behind this especially the fires suspected to have been caused by arsonists.”

The Public Works Minister went on: “We can only stem these fires if those behind arson attacks are arrested and prosecuted.” Obure the Bobasi MP called for thorough investigations into suspected arson attacks in Sameta, Igorera, Nduru and Don Bosco secondary schools.

In Sameta, three dormitories have been burnt in less than one year. Other schools affected by arson attacks include St Paul’s Gekano in Nyamira county and Kereri Girls’ Secondary School where a dormitory was burnt on Sunday night. “We are getting concerned by the increased fires in our schools. Something should be done before we lose lives of our children,” said Moreka a South Mugirango politician. “It’s tragic that students lose their property in the fires and nothing is done by the authorities,” added Moreka.

Obure and Moreka accused the police of sleeping on the job. “Police have failed to conclusively investigate the fires. We want the cause of the fires known,” added Obure. He said the fires are a nightmare for parents who can hardly sleep because of the fear of bad news from schools.
