He said the situation was part of misinformation by some self-styled “executive members” of the “Niger Delta Residents Association” in a bid to attract attention.
Dr Kunbuor, who was answering a question in Parliament yesterday, explained that the Intelligence Unit of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) had already conducted investigations into the alleged influx of refugees and ex-combatants following a series of newspaper publications.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akropong, Mr William Ofori Boafo, who had posed the question, wanted to know the cause of the influx of Niger Delta refugees into the country and what had been the impact of their presence on the politico-socio-economic activities of the country, as well as measures put in place to curb the influx.
The Interior Minister said investigations also revealed that Ghana had generally been a favourite destination for Nigerians and that statistics available indicated that there were thriving Nigerian communities in Ghana,
Dr Kunbuor gave assurance that with the deployment of the Border Patrol Unit of the GIS, the frontier areas of the country were being monitored to discourage the usage of unapproved routes by travellers.
The MP for Ketu South, Mr Albert Kwasi Zigah, also complained in his question that a wall constructed at Aflao beach had become an obstacle to the operations of fishermen in the area.
But Dr Kunbuor explained that the aim of the project was to prevent the smuggling of goods and illegal entry and exit of persons along the beach, adding that the previous wall which was constructed some years ago had been swept away by tidal waves, leaving the beach area open for smuggling activities and illegal entry and exit of migrants.
