Kenya: Players, CK Agree on Fresh Contracts

Nairobi — Cricket Kenya has withdrawn its disputed three-month contracts which the players had declined to sign.

Tom Sears, CK’s chief executive officer, said that after meeting with the players on Wednesday that it was mutually agreed that the stars will now be given one-year contracts which will be reviewed twice during their life spans to monitor the players’ performance.

He said that the first review will be carried out after the East African Premier League set to take off in August and the other review will be in February.

The inaugural league will be played on a home and away basis and will involve six teams, two each from Nairobi and Uganda, while Mombasa and Nakuru will provide a team a piece.

Sears said that he will now meet with the players individually on Friday to discuss terms of the contracts.

The players were rendered jobless on the expiry of their previous contracts at the end of May and no training has been going on even though the Africa Premier League Division One tournament in Kampala is just around the corner.

Meanwhile, ex-Kenya star Alpesh Vadher, who also played for Premier Club in the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association League, has been named the chairman of the CK selection sub-committee.

However, no other names of the panel of five members of the committee has been released.

Two of these members will be team’s head coach and captain while CK will be represented by a board member.

The previous chairmen of the selection sub-committee were both CK board members, namely David Waters and Nasoor Verjee, the latter who is also CK’s treasurer.

“I’m very honoured and excited to take on the role as chairman of selectors.

“Obviously, the recent World Cup was not good and we need to ensure we build a squad of players now that can take us into the future with improved performances and results. There is a great deal of young talent in Kenya,” Vadher said.
