Demba Ba has been backed to shine for Newcastle United by the club’s assistant manager John Carver.

The striker recently joined on a free transfer from West Ham, who finished bottom of the Premier League last season.

Carver, who has been assistant manager since January, feels the Senegalese stiriker proved his goalscoring ability at Upton Park and hopes he can bring that form to the North East.

“Towards the end of the season Demba went on a real scoring run,” he said to the Sunderland Echo.

“He was scoring goals for a struggling team. He got seven goals in 12 appearances. He’s another great addition to what we have at the club.

“To score goals for a team that was struggling for its life in the relegation zone is quite an achievement, and we’re sure he’ll do well for the club.”

In addition to Ba’s signature, Alan Pardew’s club have signed Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux from French clubs Lille and Rennes respectively.

Carver revealed the Tyneside outfit are far from finished with their spending spree and they are well prepared for further transfer activity.

“The process of identifying targets has been going on for a while, well before I came to the job,” Carver continued.

“It’s been going on over a period of time, and obviously gathered pace towards the end of the season.

“We are quite ahead of where the club’s been in the past years. There are things in place, and we’ve signed three players. The plan’s working.”
