THE mother of the late Olympic Marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru, Hannah Wanjiru, has been charged with assault and creating disturbance at her son’s grave-breaking occasion three weeks ago. Wanjiru was charged before Nyahururu Resident Magistrate Caroline Obara where she pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The charge sheet says that Wanjiru caused a breach of peace by threatening to cut her daughter-in-law Trizah Njeri with a panga on June 4 at Suera Village in Nyandarua West district.
The second count alleges that Wanjiru together with other people not before the court assaulted Trizah’s brother Paul Wanjohi Muturi, injuring him.
The magistrate released Wanjiru on a Sh30,000 cash bail and a surety of a similar amount until July 1 when the case will be mentioned. The case will be heard on August 1. Wanjiru’s lawyers Gordon Ogolla and Wilfred Konosi were not present when the charges were read to her.
Trizah and her brother Wanjohi were also not in court. Prosecutor Paul Omweri said he will call seven witnesses.
A deal had earlier been cut between the police and the Provincial Administration and her where she was promised reprieve if she cooperated with the burial committee and avoided side shows. But after the deal at Nyahururu DC’s office, she rushed to a Nakuru court to seek an injunction to block the burial.
The injunction was denied and the burial took place on Saturday June 11. She did not attend the burial. Wanjiru has not been seen in public since the eve of her son’s burial.
Her son Samuel Kamau Wanjiru died on May 16 after allegedly falling off the balcony of his house at Muthaiga Estate in Nyahururu. Mama Wanjiru and pathologists who examined the body disagreed with the police findings that he died from the fall, insisting that he was hit with a blunt object. The police findings seemed to have angered Wanjiru.
