Brahima Ouédraogo 22 June 2011 Ouagadougou — The Burkina Faso authorities have sounded the alarm over the increased rate of degradation of forests in this Sahelian country. According to a study by the Ministry for the Environment and Sustainable Development, some 110,550 hectares of forest are destroyed each year, just over four percent of the country's total wooded area - around three-quarters of this annual loss linked to farming. The data covers forest loss between 1992 and 2002, but the trend continues, according the ministry

Nairobi — African athletes have constantly produced results at top international competitions and, while many young novice athletes aspire to equal achievements of their senior colleagues, Kenyans will be parading some of the athletes who have already curved a niche for themselves on the regional circuits.

Gilbert Kirui, the Africa 3,000m steeplechase champion, and Faith Chepng’etich, the world cross country junior champion, will be the steel around which the silk of Norah Jeruto, Lillian Chepngeno, William Malel and Patrick Mutunga will be wrapped.

David Okeyo, Athletics Kenya’s secretary, on Tuesday took the time to sensitise the athletes on the need to watch out on what medication they take whenever they fall sick.

“It is crucial to tell your doctors of any medication you take so that if its banned, it can be declared early in advance,” said Okeyo.
