Edo South PDP leaders shun Anenih’s meeting

LAGOS — Prominent human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, has faulted the African Union (AU) over the organisation’s objections to grant him access to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights to challenge alleged violation of his “right to participate in the government of his country; right to the public services, and freedom from discrimination.” The AU had, while responding to Falana’s case to the Court said: “The Applicant fails to state a claim against the African Union either in law or in fact upon which any relief may be granted. The AU is not a party to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights nor the Protocol establishing the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.” However, Falana in his reply filed at the Court this week said: “The Respondent has been sued as a corporate community on behalf of its member states.

BENIN— Leaders of the Peoples Demonstrate Party, PDP, in Edo State, Wednesday, protested the nomination of Mr. Mike Onolemenmen as the Minister representing the state and Sarah Adetugbogbou as Ambassador-designate from the state.

At press time, the leaders of the party in Edo South were meeting at the home of the Edo South leader of the party, Owere-Dickson Imasogie. Other notable leaders at the meeting include the former Minister of Defence, Gen. Godwin Abbe, Captain Mike Okhomina, Dr Oni Edigin, all chairmen of the party in the seven local government areas in the South and others.

Their grouse is that they were not consulted before the name of Sarah Adetugbogbour was submitted to the Presidency consequent upon which they decided at the meeting to boycott the meeting called by Chief Tony Anenih to resolve the matter.

The leaders at the meeting argued that they had more qualified persons from Edo South to be made ministers or ambassadors and that sending the name of Adetugbobou,  who was former Commissioner for Environment under Governor Adams Oshiomhole, was unacceptable to them.

In a similar protest in Edo Central, where Chief Anenih and Onolemenmen hail from, the leaders who spoke to Vanguard, after their protest, said they were aggrieved because they were not consulted before Chief Anenih endorsed Onolemenmen, for the ministerial position.
