Badgers beat Cazadores 1-0 in a thrilling penalty shootout to win the Open division at the Cazadores Inline Hockey Tournament that finished on Sunday.
The two sides battled to a 2-all draw at the end of full time, resulting in the penalty shootout where the opposing goalkeepers Stefan Heinze of Cazadores and Uli Kramer of Badgers pulled off a series of stunning saves.
The deadlock was finally broken when Ollie Foerster beat Heinze with his fourth shot to give Badgers a 1-0 victory.
The two sides weighed up evenly during normal play, with Lars Dobberstein scoring a brace for Badgers while Michael Falk scored a brace for Cazadores.
Badgers had several more scoring opportunities during normal time but could not beat Cazadores’ keeper Heinze who pulled off some fine saves. In the shootout however, Badgers finally beat him to win the Open title.
Although Cazadores lost the Open title, they were the most successful side at the tournament, winning four of the eight age group categories, with their most significant victory coming in the Women’s category.
Badgers had dominated the women’s category for the past decade, but in Sunday’s final, Cazadores gave an inspired performance to end their domination with a 2-1 victory.
Xenia Brown and Julia Laggner scored for Cazadores while Sonja Baufeldt replied for Badgers.
Cazadores also won the Under 15 title after beating Scorpions 4-3 in the final; the Under 17 title, after beating Scorpions 4-1 in the final; and the Under 19 title after beating Badgers 7-5 in the final.
Badgers won the Under 9 title after beating Scorpions 8-0 in the final, as well as the Under 13 title where they beat Scorpions 3-2 in the final.
Scorpions won the Under 11 title after beating Cazadores 2-0 in the final.
Meanwhile the national men’s Inline Hockey team is busy preparing for the FIRS Inline Hockey World Championships which will be held in Roccaraso, Italy from July 4 to 9, 2011.
