Windhoek — This year’s Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project surpassed expectations by raising N$1.4 million, up from N$1.25 million last year.

According to Reinette Koegelenberg, Director of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN), the 2011 Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Association “is indeed the most successful cancer apple fundraising project we have seen to date”.

During a handover ceremony at CAN, Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Richard Kamwi, said N$1.4 million was raised from an average of 760000 apples sold nationwide.

He pointed out that this achievement was a result of the collective effort of all Namibians. He urged the nation to work with CAN in the fight against diseases and spreading awareness.

“Cancer is not a death sentence; with early detection, correct treatment and a healthy and positive lifestyle, most patients are cured,” the minister said.

Christ de Vries, Managing Director of Bank Windhoek, said the project would not have been as successful without the help of more than 370 schools that participated.

He made special mention of the Rundu Private School, the Deutsche Privateschule Otavi and Klouterskool in Windhoek, as having brought in the most funds of the 370-plus schools that participated.
