Wigan boss Roberto Martinez looks set to offer midfield starlet James McCarthy a new deal to try and persuade him to stay at the DW Stadium according to The Daily Mirror.
The 20-year-old has been the subject of intense interest from the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, but Martinez is hoping the Scot will follow his lead in committing to the Lancashire club.
Martinez rejected a move to Aston Villa to stay at the DW Stadium last week.
McCarthy was an integral part of the Wigan team which narrowly avoided relegation on the last day of the season at Stoke, making 24 Premier League appearances and scoring three goals.
McCarthy is said to be interested in signing the new deal, partly because of Martinez staying at the club, is also said to be settled in the area and in no rush to move, with talks between his agent and Wigan chairman Dave Whelan said to have started, with a substantial pay rise on the cards.
Liverpool’s signing of Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson and Chelsea’s squad rotation policy means McCarthy’s wish for first-team football is likely to only be granted at Wigan.
