The National Beach Soccer team lost 4-7 to their Senegalese counterparts in Sunday night’s final of the African Beach Soccer Championship in Casablanca, Morocco.

Having beaten Madagascar twice and South Africa once in earlier matches, the Supersand Eagles looked good enough to win the trophy for the third time, but a number of own goals did not help matters and the Senegalese side lifted the Cup after the final whistle.

However, the Eagles will join the Senegalese squad to represent Africa at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup billed for Ravenna, Italy, from September 1 – 11 this year.

NFF President Aminu Maigari lauded the players for their efforts and urged them to prepare very hard and focus on the big one – the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup taking place in Italy.

“The team has done well and we must commend the boys. Yes, we wanted the trophy, but football is sometimes like that and we have to encourage the players for the higher stakes coming. I believe that with the right motivation, the boys can make a good impact at the World Cup,” he said.

The Nigerian delegation to the tournament is billed to return to the country aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight early Monday morning.
