Mills’ Better Ghana Dead

26 April 2011 Last updated at 05:34 ET At least five people have been killed in the US state of Arkansas as storms and tornadoes careered up a swathe of the central United States. Three died as flood waters swept their cars off the road in the state's north-west, while two people died in a small town, possibly hit by a tornado. Meanwhile in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, 17,000 residents are hoping a levee holds and prevents major flooding.

A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Adjei Darko, has mocked President John Atta Mills’ touted ‘Better Ghana’ Agenda, describing it as one that has impoverished Ghanaians.

According to the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani West, President Mills’ so-called ‘Better Ghana’ Agenda is ‘Nkyerewie’ which has no taste and nothing good to offer Ghanaians, as majority of the people are wallowing in abject poverty and cannot therefore afford three-square meal a day.

Mr. Adjei Darko was speaking at the handing-over ceremony of the Sunyani Polytechnic Chapter of the Tertiary Education Students Confederacy of NPP (TESCON) over the weekend. Owusu Ameyaw Dan and his seven-member executives were sworn into office to lead TESCON in the next academic year.

Mr. Adjei Darko, former Local Government Minister in the erstwhile Kufuor administration, said the Mills-led NDC government has given the people of Ghana a raw deal due to its inability to manage the economy to improve the living conditions of Ghanaians after deceiving the populace to secure votes in 2008.

He therefore charged the students to rise up and spread the NPP good news to all Ghanaians to bring the party back to power, come 2012 to rescue the people from the NDC, noting, ‘You are the eyes of the party in the villages and the communities.’

Mr. Adjei Darko took a swipe at President Mills for wasting the taxpayer’s money by commissioning projects such as boreholes and toilets which District Chief Executives and their Assembly members could do on his behalf.

He challenged all NPP faithful to eschew factionalism and unit to fight the NDC.

He said the NPP’s primary objective is to recapture power, hold on to power, use power judiciously to transform the lives of Ghanaians and project Ghana across the world.

‘If we fail to recapture power in 2012, then we should forget about winning the 2016 elections,’ he added.

The MP for Sunyani West, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, said the Mills administration lacks ideas to govern the state.

According to him, the NDC used vile propaganda to win power and continues to use propaganda while in government.

He indicated that President Mills visited the Brong Ahafo Region to cut the sod for projects which have become a debacle. He cited the Berekum-Seikwa and the Atebubu-Kwame Danso Roads, adding that there are no funds to begin the projects.

This, according to him, is a propagandist approach which is an attempt to throw dust into the eyes of the public.

Commenting on the STX deal, Hon. Baffour Awuah said the opposition has been vindicated since the deal, which has hit the rocks, has caused a huge financial lost to the state.

The Sunyani West MP therefore appealed to Ghanaian students to work hard to return the NPP to power in the 2012 elections because their future will be bleak in the hands of the NDC, ‘If you vote for Nana Akuffo Addo, you vote for your future prosperity.’

The Sunyani East Constituency Research Officer, Lawrence Amponsah, who represented the Sunyani East MP, Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh, charged students to reject the NDC because the government has imposed a ban on employment into the public sector.

He noted that he has evidence that the NDC government is planning to cut down intake into tertiary institutions which he noted is going to affect thousands of Ghanaian students who want to attain tertiary education.

The former President of TESCON S-Poly, Abdul-Hamid Abdul Samed, said the Mills administration lacks agility to move the nation forward.

He described the current inflation rate as a fallacy because it does not correspond with the current harsh economic conditions.

Others speakers, including the Brong Ahafo Regional Women’s Organiser, Justina Owusu-Banahene, Regional Secretary, Alfred Ofori Annye, all charged TESCON members to play their role in the NPP’s campaign in order to win power in the next elections.
