Pretoria — US First Lady Michelle Obama is expected to land in South Africa this evening. During her visit, she will engage young people about youth leadership, education, health and wellness.
Obama will make stops in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town before leaving for Botswana’s capital, Gaborone.
The trendy US first lady – who will be accompanied by her mother and daughters, Malia and Sasha – will spend the week visiting sites of the anti-apartheid struggle, meeting dignitaries and speaking to youth leaders about empowerment.
The trip is a continuation of Obama’s work to engage young people, especially girls and young women, at home and abroad.
“This visit to two critical countries will underscore that the United States has an important stake in the success of Africa’s many nations and underscore the historic connections between the American people and those who live on the African continent.
“South Africa is a vital global partner for the United States, as political leader and economic engine on the continent, and a historic example of democratic transition in Africa and around the world,” the US embassy in South Africa said last week.
Obama’s tour commences just days before talk show queen Oprah Winfrey’s arrival in the country. Oprah jets in on Thursday. She will be in Bloemfontein, where she is expected to receive an honorary doctorate in education from the University of the Free State on Friday.
