Kenya Forestry Research Institute Kitui region centre will be upgraded soon to cover a wider area of the dry lands. The centre’s director Dr James Nduva said that the centre will cover parts of Coast, Rift valley and North Eastern provinces.
Speaking yesterday during the centre’s open day, Nduva said researchers were designing new scientific technologies to help farmers in arid- and semi-arid regions domesticate wild fruits. He said farmers were being educated on the best methods of planting indigenous trees some of which he said were better than the exotic ones for timber. He said the centre was working closely with KWS and Kenya Forestry Services to help farmers plant the banned sandal wood.
