Foni — Kaddy Camara, the ward councillor for Bantanjang in Foni Bondali District of the West Coast Region, has emphasised her people’s readiness to go back to the land for the attainment of food self-sufficiency and alleviation of poverty. The lady councillor was speaking in response to the donation of the two tractors to the ward by the Gambian leader.

“The women of my ward are great people; they engage in gardening during the dry season in order to take care of their children’s school fees and when the rainy season comes, they all go back to their rice fields to grow what they eat,” she commended.

According to her, the only way to kick poverty out of The Gambia is to answer to President Jammeh’s ‘back to the land’ clarion call. “This year, if we [farmers] make maximum use of the tractors, with the technical support from the agricultural extension workers, we will realize a bumper harvest,” she observes, and went on to note that President Jammeh is doing all he can to transform the agriculture sector of the country into a well mechanized one.

She however said that the two tractors will go a long way in improving their wellbeing and also in reducing the burden on them. Camara finally thanked President Jammeh on behalf of her people for the gesture, and promised that the tractors will be put to good use.
