Former Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton has reportedly held talks over replacing Alex McLeish as manager of Birmingham City.

According to skysports.com, the 52-year-old met with the club on Friday to discuss taking over the role following McLeish’s move across the city to Aston Villa.

Hughton enjoyed a successful spell in charge of Newcastle, helping the club win the Championship and promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

However, he was sacked as manager at St James’ Park with the club sitting in a respectable 11th position in the Premier League after a 3-1 defeat to West Brom with Alan Pardew installed in his place.

Such experience may appeal to Birmingham, who were relegated on the final day of last season after defeat to Tottenham at White Hart Lane, as they seek to bounce back into the top flight of English football at the first attempt.

Hughton has also been linked with a move to Fulham, as assistant to Martin Jol, the pair having previously spent three seasons together at Tottenham.

Other names in the frame for the job include former West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola, although Hughton is believed to be the favourite to take the post at present.
