Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has rubbished reports saying that midfielder Glenn Whelan would leave the club in the near future.
The former Sheffield Wednesday player was part of a Stoke side who again comfortably survived in the Premier League and got to the FA Cup final, where they lost to Whelan’s first professional club side, Manchester City.
The Irishman, who moved to the Britannia Stadium in 2008, has recently been linked with Fulham, but his manager dismissed any possibility of him leaving, before praising Whelan’s contribution to Stoke’s impressive season.
“The speculation is tittle-tattle. Glenn did smashing for us last season,” Pulis told The Sentinel.
“But he has been in a situation that a lot of Premier League players find themselves in.
“They get worn out. I don’t just mean physically, but they get mentally drained too and they need to rest.
“Glenn always plays at 100 per cent, he never gives anything less, so it is important to recognise that the demands in the Premier League are different from those in the Championship. There will be times when players just have to rest.”
