Nairobi Star (Nairobi) Maureen Mudi 16 June 2011 Trade minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere has defended the awarding of Sh48.5 million as costs of an election petition against him, saying the amount is reasonable. Mwakwere has filed a replying affidavit challenging an application filed by the IIEC who claim the amount is too big for the tax payer. But the Matuga MP who lost the petition but won a subsequent by-election said the amount is commensurate with the nature of the case, time taken and that the taxing master explained how he arrived at the Sh18 million for two lawyers

Chemelil Sugar are set to axe eight players from their playing roster before the end of the transfer period, chairman Robert Nyakundi announced yesterday.

Nyakundi, however didn’t divulge names of players targeted for the axe but said they’ll have a meeting with the technical bench to identify players who will be retained. “We plan to have meeting with the technical bench in the next couple of days to evaluate the players performance and make the decision,” he added.

The move is against Kenya Premier League (KPL) directive that clubs must clear with existing players who are on contracts before firing them. Nyakundi said players will be informed of their fate once the technical bench has meet. He said they are happy with the club’s performance recently under the tutelage of Edward Manoah, who replaced Nick Yakhama

Chemelil are currently placed eighth on the standings with 18 points and Nyakundi believes they can finish even higher.” I think we can finish higher than position we are in right now and our form has improved since the arrival of Manoah. We expect to be in top six by the end of the season,” he added.

He said they are exploring options of signing other players to bolster the side ahead of the second half of the season. “We are looking for ways to sign one or two players but I am confident we will be in a strong position to get one or two players before the start of the second leg,” he added. Nyakundi said the league is more competitive this year as several teams had improved. “There are no longer small teams in the league and you have seen the likes of Rangers upsetting the big sides to top the league,” he said.
