Deputies at the National Assembly Wednesday ratified a financial grant agreement amounting to US$4.4 million between The Gambia and the African Development Fund (ADF) for the incremental financing of the Participatory Integrated Watershed Management Project (PIWAMP).
The implementation of the project is expected to commence on 17, December 2011. Presenting the motion before deputies, Mamburey Njie, the minister of Finance and Economic Affairs explained that the project would enable rural resource poor communities in The Gambia to alleviate poverty and food insecurity by preventing and reversing declining land productivity through a community-baseed participatory approach to watershed landscape management planning which targets small, large and medium investments aimed at increasing productivity and profitability of their crops, livestock, forestry and eco tourism based enterprises.
According to Minister Njie, the immediate environmental objective of the project is to overcome the causes and negative impact of land degradation and climate change on health, structure of the country’s lowland and upland ecosystem resources, while realising global, national and local environmental stability.
He finally disclosed that the total number of households that will benefit directly from the project is estimated at 5,500, of whom 10 per cent are mainly from the rural areas.
