Uefa have announced that the 2013 Champions League Final will be held at Wembley for the second time in three years.
The decision was made by Uefa’s executive committee in Nyon, Switzerland, who awarded Wembley the honour of the event so soon after the 2011 final due to the 150th anniversary of the English Football Association which they feel deserves the recognition of European football.
Platini told the Uefa website: “This may seem exceptional but I think it was important for us to respect this anniversary of our game.
“Given the exceptional nature of this historic moment in our beautiful game, and the fact that we will also celebrate 150 years of the Laws of the Game, we felt it was our duty at UEFA to help the FA celebrate in some special way.
“For this reason we have decided to return to England and specifically to Wembley Stadium – the home of the English FA – for the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final.”
Wembley hosted its first Champions League final since 1992 in May when Barcelona defeated Manchester United and the event was regarded as success by the Uefa hierarchy.
However there were problems regarding ticket prices for the final which led to criticism of the FA and Uefa with the cheapest tickets being £150. This forced Platini to apologise and he insisted prices would be reduced in the future.
