Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda retained his WBO African bantamweight title after knocking Norfat Emilio of Tanzania out in the final round of their 12-round fight at the Windhoek Country Club on Saturday night.
Ambunda got into the fight with his strong right hand and used it to knock down Emilio in the second round, but he quickly got up before the referee, Timo Haikonda, counted him out.
The rest of the fight continued with Ambunda landing some powerful blows but failing to end the fight in the earlier rounds, as he is famously known for having ended 10 of his previous fights in knockouts.
In the final round, Emilo was trapped against the ropes and received some damaging body blows from Ambunda who had decided to step up the tempo and he succumbed after 2 minutes and 30 seconds in the final round.
Despite the knockout, Ambunda was ahead in points as the judges all had him leading 110-98, 110-98, 110-98 after the 11th round.
UUSHONA RETURNS
Betuel ‘Tyson’ Uushona made a successful comeback after his loss to Denton Vassell in a Commonwealth title fight in England in March that cost him his WBO Africa welterweight title.
Uushona announced his return with a points victory over 12 rounds against Kenyan Peter Olouch which also made him the WBO Africa welterweight interim champion.
Uushona, who was in control of the fight from the start pounded Oluochi with some hard body punches, but his opponent proved to be tough as he gave as good as he got and refused to go out without a fight.
Olouch managed to hang in until the final round despite the crowd cheering for Uushona to knock him out. At the conclusion of the fight, all three judges gave a unanimous decision to Uushona with two of the judges scoring the bout 120-108 and one scoring it 119-109.
In another fight, Julius Indongo became the national lightweight titleholder after he defeated Peter Malakia through a technical knockout on the final round of the bout.
Both fighters started the fight strong after they managed to land some powerful blows.
The fighters were evenly matched throughout the bout, but it was Indongo who managed in the final round to corner Malakia and peppered him with a barrage of punches, which resulted in the referee stopping the fight.
The results of other fights were as follows:
