Luiz Suarez says he does not think about the history of the No.7 shirt when he pulls it on.

The number is synonymous with the Anfield faithful for being the shirt of legends such as Kevin Keegan, Peter Beardsley and current manager Kenny Dalglish.

Suarez told the club’s official website: “When I got the number seven I was happy because I knew it was a historic number that various top players had worn throughout the club’s history. But the number I’ve got on the back of my shirt is the last thing on my mind when I go out to play.”

He added: “I just go out to try and do my best and it certainly doesn’t add any weight of expectation more than any other number would do for me.

“As for comparisons with the number seven, I just think it’s down to luck really.”

The 24-year-old, who signed from Ajax in January, said he was delighted when he heard Kenny Dalglish had been offered a permanent contract at Anfield.

Suarez said: “Not just myself but also the whole squad were really happy when he signed the contract to become our permanent manager.

“He is a very experienced manager, but not only is he an experienced manager, he knows the club and he knows the quality and the type of player the club needs to achieve success.

“He’s worked inside the club, knows how it works and I think that will help the club in the future as well.”

Suarez was signed for the Merseyside club in January for £22.8 million from Dutch side Ajax and scored four goals in 13 games.
