The Mills-led government yesterday disassociated itself from the ongoing chieftaincy crisis in the Ga State. According to the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), the government had not hand in the installation of a new Ga Mantse.

This follows the installation of another Ga Mantse on Sunday, June 12, 2011, under the stool name Nii Boni Tackie Adama Latse II by some king-makers of the Ga State, and the subsequent question of his legitimacy by spokespersons for King Tackie Tawiah III, the rival chief.

In a statement issued by the REGSEC and signed by the Chief Director of the Office of Regional Co-ordinating Council, Greater Accra, Mr. F.T Nartey, in Accra yesterday, it stated categorically that ‘the government does not, and will not determine who is a chief’ of Accra, adding that the nomination and installation of chiefs were the prerogatives of accredited king-makers, and the government, in accordance with the 1992 Constitution, would not confer on itself or any other person or authority, the right to accord or withdraw recognition to or from a chief for any purpose whatsoever.

The statement, therefore, appealed to the people of Accra, especially, Ga Mashie and its environs, to remain calm and be law-abiding in the midst of these developments.

The government urged all interested parties to the Ga paramount stool, who are aggrieved in one way or the other by the installation of another Ga Mantse, to seek redress at the appropriate traditional institutions and the courts.

The statement indicated: ‘The REGSEC’s interest is the maintenance of peace and security in the Region, and wishes to assure the general public that adequate security has been provided to ensure that peace is maintained in the region.’

To this end, the REGSEC has directed the security agencies to monitor developments and take necessary steps to deal decisively with any person who would take the law into his/her own hands.
