Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas: Barcelona can guarantee trophies but my future is not in my hands

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has spoken at length about his frustration at not winning trophies and not being able to decide his future amidst growing speculation that he could finally move to Barcelona this summer.

The midfielder has long been linked with a return to the Catalans and told Spanish radio station Cope that he would not publicly declare he wanted to leave out of respect for his current club, but admitted that he wanted to progress his career.

Fabregas, who has not won anything as Arsenal skipper, said: “Barcelona guarantee titles in the past, present and the future. Just as Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid do; they are institutions which, whatever happens, will always guarantee you titles. And it’s clear that I, as a player, want to keep improving every day and see how far I can go.

“I am frustrated at not winning titles, I have said that. But I am only 24 and I said to myself the day I became a professional, that I wanted to be the best I could become. It’s clear there are clubs that offer you – guarantee you – titles, competition, a personal challenge, etc.”

The Spaniard, who joined Arsenal as a 16-year-old in 2003, maintained that his future is not in his hands, saying: “Not everything depends on me. I wish it did, but as it doesn’t it’s impossible to say.”

Fabregas is held in high esteem by Arsenal supporters and revealed that he would not openly announce that he wanted to join Barcelona.

“I won’t lose all that by saying four words that for me aren’t necessary, make them public,” he said, referring to “Quiero ir al Barça” – “I want to join Barca”.

“If I have to say something, I will do so in private and respecting the people who have given me so much.

“Everyone interprets their life or their decisions in the way they see convenient for themselves. And I have to act like the captain of Arsenal, which is what I am now, and I will do that until the last second.”

The World Cup winner insisted that he has not discussed his future with Arsene Wenger or the Arsenal board.

“I haven’t spoken to the boss about this,” he said. “I did last year. And it’s nothing new because everyone knows it and lots of things have been written about it.

“At the end of the day, what will happen, will happen, and that’s that. I can’t say more because there’s nothing more to say. The day there’s any more to say, hopefully I can come out and say more, but as I don’t know much, or practically nothing, there’s not much I say.”
