Chelsea have had a £22 million bid for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric rejected, according to The Telegraph.

The Stamford Bridge side have yet to appoint a new manager since the departure of Carlo Ancelotti at the end of the season, but are looking to improve their squad in a bid to regain the Premier League crown from Manchester United.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has insisted that the Croatian playmaker will not be leaving White Hart Lane this summer, but admits that the player has had his head turned by a potential move to either United or Chelsea.

Chelsea’s bid was reportedly flatly turned down by Spurs, but it has been reported that they will return with an improved bid to tempt the White Hart Lane outfit into selling one of their star players.

As Goal.com UK exclusively revealed, Manchester United have dropped out of the race to sign Modric after baulking at Spurs’ £50m valuation, and have since turned their attentions to Inter’s Wesley Sneijder.

This leaves Chelsea in the driving seat in the race for Modric’s signature, but it seems as though they will have to drastically increase their offer to stand any chance of landing the Croatian.
