BY Abdulwahab Abdulah & Oamen Areguamen LAGOS—The former Managing Director of Bank PHB Plc, Mr. Francis Atuche, and his wife, Elizabeth, yesterday, asked an Ikeja High Court, Lagos,  to quash the new charge  against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. They also want the court to restrain the agency from bringing any new charge against them.

Some members of the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council have been injured after police fired tear gas and shots to disperse them after they attempted to forcefully enter the Castle and present a petition to the President.

This occurred moment after the rampaging fishermen in their hundreds demonstrated from James Town to the independence square.

Upon reaching to the Castle some of the fishermen wanted to go straight to the castle although their leaders had agreed that the castle junction was going to be their last point.

This resulted in a scuffle with the Police who wanted to control the rioting fishermen. Four of them were quickly rushed to the police Hospital after sustaining injuries.

The group has however petitioned President Mills to cause the laws governing fishing in the country to be applied.

The fisherman say they are angry about the fact that years after the promulgation of a law which makes certain fishing practices illegal, nothing is being done by the authorities to apply the law.

In an interview with Citi News moments after presenting their petition, Nii Aboe Kyerekwanda the fourth President of the fishermen bemoaned the fact that practices like pair trawling still exist.

Two of the Policemen are also reported to have gotten injured due to clashes with the Fishermen.
