Aston Villa value Liverpool target Stewart Downing at £20 million, according to The Mirror.

The England international is reportedly interested in a move away from Villa Park as they continue to look for a new manager, but the club’s board are looking for twice the amount they paid Middlesbrough for him if he is to leave.

Kenny Dalglish is keen to bring the midfielder to Anfield, but has been told he will have to sell players in order to clear the wage bill and make funds available for more players.

Villa team-mate Ashley Young is also interested in a move away from the Midlands club this summer, with Manchester United believed to be close to signing him. Young has just one year left on his contract and the board are likely to cash in now rather than risk losing him for nothing at the end of next season.

Villa will wait to appoint a new manager before deciding on the futures of their prize assets, but will be reluctant to let both Young and Downing leave.

Downing is keen to team up with close friend Andy Carroll at Anfield but the transfer fee could prove to be a stumbling block.

The situation is similar to Gareth Barry’s three years ago, when the midfielder wanted a move away from Villa Park but Liverpool were unable to meet the club’s asking price.
