Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp believes Benoit Assou-Ekotto is one of the best in the business

Benoit Assou-Ekotto is among the top left-backs in the world in the view of Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp

Redknapp believes the Cameroon defender has developed his game over the last season and now ranks alongside the best in the business.

The Spurs boss told reporters: “Assou-Ekotto is one of the best left-backs around.

“He’s quick, strong, aggressive and has amazing ability. His body strength is unbelievable.

“You watch when he goes for a 50-50 – players bounce off him.

“There aren’t many better than him for sure and you certainly wouldn’t want to play against him as a winger.”

Assou-Ekotto was a regular in the Spurs team last season as they reached the Champions League quarter-finals before eventually being knocked out by Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The 27-year-old himself said: “I played a lot of games and I think I played well.

“When you play one game and do well, it gives you confidence for the next game. After 10 you have even more confidence and that’s good for the whole season.

“It was a great experience, especially the Champions League when we finished in the last eight.

“For our first time in the competition, that was great.”

The Cameroonian made 44 appearances in all competitions last season as Tottenham narrowly missed out on a Champions League place for the 2011-12 campaign.
