Kenya’s athletics team to the world youth games in Lille, France were called to camp yesterday well before the June 17 set time. Coach Robert Ngisirei said the team was called to training early to give coaches enough time to take the athletes through a “reconditioning process.” “These athletes have run in many races and in quick succession and need enough time in training to help them attain full fitness,” Ngisirei said

The team will be training at the Nyayo Stadium and reside at the YMCA hostels in Nairobi South “C” for the duration before departing for France on July 2. “The athletes have started to arrive one by one depending on the proximity of their home areas. We are expecting to have all of them by 6 pm today (yesterday),” added Ngisirei. The coach will be assisted by Kariuki Gikonyo and Paul Okwaro.

Among the big names in the team are world cross country champion Faith Chepngetich and the bronze medallist Sheila Chepngetich who will run in the1,500m event. The team will take part in seven events for both men and women and is comprised of 22 athletes (12 boys and 10 girls). The competition in Rome will be between July 6 and 10.”We intend to do well in the competition. Our approach of starting early preparations will be a big plus towards this goal,” Ngisirei said.
