New — The US senator Bill Perkins last Friday handed over a diploma of merit to the general-consul of Angola in New York, Júlia Machado, for her contribution and commitment to the reinforcement of the co-operation and friendship relations between Angola and the United of States of America, especially in the domain of cultural exchange.
Bill Perkins, who was speaking on behalf of the New York State, at an official reception in the ambit of the end of Júlia Machado’s diplomatic mission to this country, highlighted the importance of the existing co-operation and interchange between the peoples of Angola and the United States.
The senator stressed also the need to educate young people stimulating them to study the common past, particularly in regard to the arrival of the first Africans in New York, which dates back to the XVII century.
On her turn, Roberta Yancy, director of the Schomburg Center (Black Culture Research Centre) emphasised the strong co-operation between her institution and the Angolan authorities, mainly with Angola’s Slavery Museum, having also defended the need to strengthen the existing co-operation ties.
