A total of 12,138 athletes and accompanying officials from the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory have been confirmed registered to participate in the forth coming 17th National Sports Festival in Port-Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.

This was confirmed at the end of the Delegates Registration Meeting for the 17th National Sports Festival which held at the Abuja National Stadium from May 26 to June 6.

The Delegates Registration Meeting which involves on-line accreditation of athletes and officials is the first in the 38 years history of the National Sports Festival.

According to the organizers, the exercise is designed to ensure hitch-free accreditation for both athletes and officials who would be taking part in the sports festival.

In a related development, the festival Torch of Unity currently on a tour of the 36 States arrived Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on June 7 and was received by government officials. It will be recalled that the movement of the Unity Torch was flagged off by President Goodluck Jonathan on May 10 at the Presidential Villa.

The Torch is expected to arrive the Garden City, Port-Harcourt on Saturday July 2 for the official opening of the 17th National Sports Festival at a grand ceremony.

Athletes and officials are billed to arrive Port-Harcourt on June 27 to commence competition on June 29.
