Alan Pardew, Newcastle United
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew says he is confident he will be in a position to announce the club’s second summer signing at some point within the next ten days.
Pardew opened his summer spending with the signing of France international midfielder Yohan Cabaye from French champions Lille for an undisclosed fee last week.
The club missed out on Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro, who has instead elected to join Paris Saint-Germain, but are reportedly still in talks with Swansea full-back Neil Taylor and West Ham striker Demba Ba over possible moves.
Pardew would not be drawn into discussing the details of his transfer targets, but did reveal he was optimistic that further arrivals are imminent.
“Things are definitely moving on now and we expect to be busier between now and the start of the season,” he told the Journal.
“We’re working very hard on one or two players and we hope to announce something soon.
“We should be able to announce a second signing, I would think, in the next 10 days.”
The former West Ham boss also insisted he is not restricted in how much of the £35 million the club received for Andy Carroll he is allowed to spend, instead claiming his influence in the transfer market has been enhanced by the increased funds at his disposal.
“We aren’t going to rule ourselves out of any situation,” he added.
“We want quality players at this football club so if the players are out there and we think we’ve got a chance, we’ll try our very best.
“Some players who we bid for might want Champions League football so they’ll be going there, others will be prepared to come to us because of the magnificent fanbase and the history here too.
“I think the likes of Everton, Sunderland and Bolton are the competitors that we have in this window, but we’ve got a chance because of the Andy Carroll money.”
