Liverpool‘s new signing Jordan Henderson has said that he left Sunderland with a heavy heart but he is looking forward to playing for a bigger club.

Henderson grew up in Sunderland and came through the youth ranks before becoming a regular in their line-up two seasons ago.

The 20-year-old made the move to Liverpool just before he joined up with the England under-21s and he admits that he is excited to move.

He told Sky Sports: “Liverpool’s a massive club. I’ve been at Sunderland a long time and I’ve supported them since I was a kid so it hurt a little bit to go, but obviously Liverpool’s a massive, massive club and I’m looking forward to the future, I’m really excited by it.”

Henderson also revealed that he was looking forward to working with manager Kenny Dalglish, who has turned the team’s fortunes around since taking over in January.

When asked if he was impressed with Dalglish’s contribution to the team, he added: “Yeah, definitely. The manager’s been there for only a short space of time and you can see how well he’s done.

“The players have done brilliantly as well, so I am really looking forward to it.”

Henderson has been touted as a possible replacement for current Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, and the midfielder admitted that he is looking forward to working alongside the seasoned campaigner after the European Under-21 Championships.

“Yeah, it’ll be massive for me, learning from such a good player,” he said.

“There’s obviously a lot of good players at Liverpool but I’ll learn a lot from Steven. You can see what he’s achieved in the game over many years. But like I say, I’m just trying to concentrate on this tournament and do the best that I can for England.”
