Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Martin AmiduThe Attorney General and Minister of Justice has expressed displeasure about attempts to draw his office into the politics of the handing over of a video tape said to identify the killers of the late Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II by former President Rawlings.

According to Martin Amidu, the brouhaha surrounding the said videotaped evidence of the Ya-Na’s murder is taking a political twist, with some persons within the NDC seeking to make political capital out of it in the run up to the NDC’s flagbearer contest by casting the A-G’s office as not interested in pursuing the case and seeking justice for the victims.

The Attorney General however warned: “We ought to leave the Attorney General’s office out of the debate for who should be flagbearer for the NDC”.

Mr Amidu was responding to comments by the Spokesperson of the Rawlingses, Kofi Adams over the weekend. Mr Adams told NDC delegates in Tamale that the Mills-led government was unwilling to find the killers of the Ya-Na despite being presented with videotaped evidence of the king’s murderers.

Kofi Adams had earlier revealed the handing over of the tape to Deputy Attorney General Ebo Barton Odro in an exclusive interview with Citi FM’s Northern Region Correspondent Abdul Karim Naatogmah.

Mr Amidu told Citi News the contents of the tape as delivered by the then spokesperson of Mr. Rawlings, Victor Smith, was just a conversation between Mr Smith and a relative of the Ya-Na several months after the incident, and wondered why it was raised at a meeting to convince NDC delegates to vote for Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.

“The whole hullaballoo about this tape in question should be looked at within the context within which it was raised. From the newspapers I read, it was raised in Tamale quite recently during a campaign for NDC flagbeareship which is a campaign in which people want delegates from Dagbon to support one side or the other so they just throw in this thing to spoil the work.

“Where I am concerned about is the allusion to my office as hiding something from the trial and therefore not being able to secure a conviction. I think that questions the integrity of people involved in the prosecution of the case which I do not think is good because attorneys have no stake in the trial, all they are doing is to lay the facts bare to the court and I believe they have done it as best as they can…

“If for any reason the court decided that there is no case for the accused person(s) to answer and we have got an appeal. If they have a beef to pick, I think they should let us try our appeal as best as we can and not pull us in to answering political questions. I do not want to get into the flagbearership debate…

“We ought to leave the Attorney General’s office out of the debate for who should be flagbearer for the NDC,” the Attorney General said.
