Nairobi — The Independent Disciplinary and Complaints Committee has found Gor Mahia guilty of causing the abandonment of their KPL Top Eight Knock-out semi-final clash against Ulinzi Stars on May 8.
IDCC is expected to release their official ruling on Tuesday, but sources within the Kenyan Premier League intimated that the match will be awarded to Ulinzi, and Gor punished for acts of hooliganism by a section of their fans at Nyayo Stadium.
The seven-member disciplinary committee chaired by Migai Aketch held a hearing on Friday to investigate the troubled match.
The referee called off the tie at Nyayo Stadium in the 60th minute after unruly Gor Mahia fans started throwing missiles onto the pitch.
Fans on the rampage
The fans then went on the rampage damaging stadium property and vehicles, including the Ulinzi team bus that was vandalised and players’ property stolen.
Sports Stadia Management Board have estimated damages to Nyayo Stadium at Sh640,000, while Ulinzi Stars have put their loss at Sh1.8 million.
IDCC is also expected to rule on who is liable to pay for the damages. The disciplinary body is also due to investigate the league matches involving Gor Mahia and Rangers (played February 26) and AFC Leopards and Thika United (May 8) rocked by violent acts from fans.
Other members of the committee are Njeri Onyango, Billy Amendi, Alfred Imonje, Pamela Ochieng, Gabriel Otiende and William Odeny.
IDCC’s predecessor Independent Disciplinary an Appeals Committee last year ordered both Gor and AFC to play some of their matches behind closed doors and fined them following acts of violence by their fans.
KPL has an official zero tolerance on hooliganism.
