He said since the country was operating under a constitutional regime where fundamental basic freedoms were guaranteed, the government respected the provisions in the Constitution and would not act outside it.
Baba Jamal said this when he addressed media practitioners drawn from the Volta Region in the Ho as part of a regional tour to launch the “Branding Ghana from Inside” project in the Volta Region last Thursday.
He said Ghana was a beacon of democracy in Africa and the neighbouring states because of the peaceful coexistence and tolerance of political parties in the country.
He urged journalists to criticise constructively and be patriotic and show more professionalism in their job.
Baba Jamal said governments would come and go but the state would remain and so it behoves journalists not to allow themselves to be misused by politicians.
“No country can grow without its journalists growing with it and I stress that you should become catalysts of development and not catalysts of crisis,” he said.
According to him, President John Ata Mills is a tolerant and accommodating leader and was prepared to work with everybody to achieve the “Better Ghana Agenda”.
He said his exceptional character had earned him titles such as the “King of Peace” and the “King of Humility”.
Alhaji Baba Jamal also urged citizens to show reverence to national emblems in order not to undermine the national pride.
The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Colonel Cyril Necku(rtd.), said the region was a friendly zone so far as media performance was concerned, adding that “the media is doing well.”
The Regional Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Kafui Kanyi, said the media would work objectively according to the tenets of their profession despite criticisms.
