Nigeria striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni endured unending boos when he came on as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s testimonial game for Nwankwo Kanu in Lagos.
Supporters clearly had not forgiven the Everton man’s miss in the crucial World Cup 2010 game against South Korea.
At every touch of the ball the powerfully built striker, who is on loan at Leicester City, was booed by many of the fans at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
At the end of the game, which ended 3-1 in favour of the Super Eagles All Stars, Yakubu tendered an apology to Nigerians and hoped that they would forgive his mistake.
“I didn’t do it on purpose,” he is quoted as saying. “In football you miss chances for your club and people forgive you. I didn’t do it on purpose. I’m just here to say I’m sorry for what happened. They fans should forgive and forget.”
Yakubu, who has been out of the national team set up since the World Cup, also stated that he will be available for the Super Eagles if coach Samson Siasia is interested in his services.
