Maritime worker’s family gets N5m compensation

LAGOS — MARITIME Workers of Nigeria, MWUN, has secured a N5million compensation for the family of late Taiwo Olakunle, who died as a result of an industrial accident at Tin Can Island Container Terminal Limited, TICTL on May 31, 2011.

Another N750,000 was also secured from the company for burial expenses of the deceased.  It will be recalled that Mr. Olakunle, a Dockworke with TSE Stevedoring Company, died instantly after an industrial accident at TICTL, on May 31, 2011.

However, after a meeting involving the Port manager, Tin Can Island Port Complex, TSE Stevedoring, TICTL, leaders of the Dockworkers branch of the MWUN, and the Divisional Police Officer, Tin Can Island Port,  where it was agreed , N750,000 be immediately made available for the burial of Mr. Olakunle, the leadership of the union called the workers back to work.

At a subsequent meeting on June 7, 2011 held at the Osho Drive Headquaters of MWUN, the union was able to get N5m compensation for the deceased family (wife and Children).

At the meeting were the President-General of MWUN, Comrade Tony Emmanuel Nted, Secretary-General of MWUN, Mr S. Aham Ubani, President of Dockworkers’ Branch of MWUN, Mr Adewale Adeyanju, two representatives of the deceased family, Tijani Mukaila Olakunle and Rasaki Idowu, Representatives of TICTL/TSE, Richard Akinbosotu, Uche Nora Meme and Usman Abdullahi and a witness and representative of Nigeria Port Authority, NPA, Tin Can Island Port Management.
