Abuja — President Barack Obama of the United States of America yesterday met with Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan in his Oval office and urged the Nigerian leader to intensify the fight on corruption in Nigeria.
According to readout from the Office of the Chief Press Secretary to President Obama, the meeting was used to re-affirm the strong bilateral relationship between both countries.
This was as the American President personally congratulated Jonathan on the success of Nigeria’s recent election.
The election had received world wide commendation for being free and fair and the best organized since the country returned to democratic rule in 1999.
The readout which was monitored in Abuja noted that the election will help to deepen democracy in Nigeria.
“The leaders discuss how the Jonathan’s administration can build on this momentum by investing on Nigeria’s energy supply, Agricultural productivity, democratic institution and security sector”
Obama called on Jonathan to make fighting corruption a national priority and a critical step in ensuring the necessary condition for sustained growth and lasting priority.
The president also thanked Jonathan for his leadership role both regionally and within the United Nations Security Council such as Sudan, Libya, and Cote D’ Ivoire.
This is just as both leaders agreed to continue to work together for peace and security.
