Tottenham’s Danny Rose ‘privileged’ to be in England Under-21s squad

Tottenham midfielder Danny Rose says he feels “privileged” to be in the squad for England’s campaign in the Under-21 European Championships in Denmark.

The 20-year-old winger impressed in an unfamiliar left-back role at the end of last season, winning rave reviews from manager Harry Redknapp, and it is this form that has seen him catapulted into the reckoning for a starting place.

Rose told Tottenham’s official website: “For me, considering the amount of football I’ve played, I feel quite privileged to be in and around the squad and to have played as many times as I have.

“I’ve managed to be in most of the squads and I hope that continues.

“We’re very strong, one of the strongest squads out there. Everyone gets along with each other and we’re all competing for places.”

Rose also spoke of his experience in the 2009 European Championships, where he was a late replacement for Danny Welbeck.

“I was playing for the Under-19s and did well, Stuart Pearce was watching, Danny Welbeck then pulled out of the Under-21 squad and I was called-up,” he added.

“Looking back, it was one of the best summers I’ve ever had.

“I only played one game, the final against Germany, but it was a great experience up against the likes of Ozil, Khedira and Boateng.

“The training was also fantastic, really sharp. It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to this tournament as well.”
