Concord Times (Freetown) Rodney Edmond Michael 9 June 2011 opinion Freetown — The much celebrated Leone Stars victory over the Mena Stars of Niger is now history, and the attention of all is drawn to the months ahead when the heroes of June 4th, our darling Leone Stars, will be expected to perform the most difficult task ever demanded from any of our National Football Teams, in fact of any Sporting discipline, which will be to beat the Pharaohs of Egypt and Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the first weekend of September and the second weekend of October 2011, to earn qualification for African Nations Cup 2012 in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea for the first time since 1996. Having taken the complex qualification calculations of CAF, caused by the withdrawal of Mauritania, into consideration our only possible route to qualification is winning both matches. The honeymoon is coming to an end and soon the Nation will want to know the planning phase for Leone Stars versus Egypt, even though four months away, it will need to be properly planned to ensure the financial difficulties faced by The Ministry of Sports, the poor quality ticket sold at the Niger match, and the administrative difficulties experienced in the organization of the said match do not occur again; but also to ensure the public issues raised by the FA and The Ministry do not rock or interfere with the preparations, and that this time the technical team is sorted out well in advance to avoid delayed planning.

Freetown — Sierra Leone and AIK Solna striker, Ibrahim Tetteh Bangura will welcome a move to English Premier League side Newcastle United.

Recently, reports in various British media say Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is tracking the Sierra Leone international striker dubbed ‘the new Didier Drogba’. The striker has exclusively told Concord Sports he will welcome a move to the English Premier League as it is the dream of every young player to play in bigger leagues.

He said: “I was very happy to receive such news because it is the dream of every footballer to play at the top level in football. You know playing from the junior level you need to progress, so such news was welcome information for me.”

Already the 21-year-old believes he can cope with the English game and can adapt as quick as possible. “You know in football I always see myself as top because we are all playing the game; lots of African footballers have played there,” he said.

“Our football legend, Mohamed Kallon was able to play in the Italian league, even Rodney Strasser is currently playing in the Italian league. So I believe I have the potential to play in the English league.”

The AIK Solna striker is already making the headlines in Sweden after playing just eight league games and scoring four goals.

Over the weekend, Bangura scored his first senior goal for the national team Leone Stars in their 1-0 win over Niger at the National Stadium in Freetown to revive the Stars’ hopes of qualifying to the 2012 African Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea/Gabon.
