Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is hopeful that the Anfield club’s new signing Jordan Henderson can follow in his footsteps on Merseyside.
Henderson’s switch from Sunderland marks a clear move from boss Kenny Dalglish to invest in young English talent, having signed Andy Carroll for a club record £35 million in January.
Gerrard admits the club is right to look to replace players such as himself and Jamie Carragher sooner rather than later so that the club is well-placed to progress.
Speaking to The Liverpool Echo, he said: “It’s a really positive signing – let’s hope he is the next Steven Gerrard.
“Liverpool needs a new Steven Gerrard and it will need a new Jamie Carragher.
“That’s what good football clubs do – they replace their best players.
“I saw Jordan at first hand for two or three days with England and he is a good player with energy.”
Gerrard is currently recovering from injury but declared earlier on Friday that he is optimistic of returning for the new season in the best physical shape he has been in for a decade.
Henderson is currently preparing for the European Under-21 championships, which take place in Denmark, with England facing Spain in what looks like an attractive opening fixture.
