The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Samuel Sarpong, on Thursday June 9, caused the arrest of two panelists on a Kumasi-based private radio station, Kapital Radio.

According to him, one of the men had threatened on air to bomb the offices of the Assembly in retaliation for the demolition of his container store near the Ahujo Roundabout in Kumasi.

According to him, the other panelist had made some derogatory comments about him regarding the demolition exercise that sought to attack his personality.

The News Editor of Kapital Radio, Mr. Erastus Asare Donkor, who confirmed the incident to Citi News, said the Kumasi Mayor stormed the offices of the station with City guards and some members of the Police Buffalo Unit to whisk away the two gentlemen from the station’s studio.

He said the two gentlemen, Kwabena Konadu and Kwabena Ofori, were taken to the Kumasi Central Police Station and held for several hours. According to Mr. Asare Donkor, attempts by the management of the Radio station to settle the issue without police involvement proved futile.

“He came with about eight city guards and wanted us to bring out two of our guests on the morning show because he was not too happy with as some comments that they had passed on air concerning the decongestion exercise which seeks to attack his personality. So he demanded that the two gentlemen be brought out. Our Programmes Manager tried to calm him down but he called in the Buffalo Unit to come in. Not too long after, about four armed policemen stormed the station and handcuffed the two gentlemen and sent them to the Central Police Station”.

Meanwhile Police in Kumasi have told Citi News the two men were later granted a police enquiry bail, and are to report back to the Station on Friday June 10, for possible prosecution.

In recent past, some cities, particularly Kumasi, have witnessed several of such occurrences, where radio panelists are either arrested or threatened for making one statement or the other.

The matter became a subject of public debate mostly because some had political connotations. Critics have argued that the practice threatens Ghana’s growing democracy.
